~Rivalry Week~
Brent def. Nick (167.5-108.8)
This matchup was circled for both managers after a tough battle in the 3rd place game last year. The Brock Purdy (21.9) to Mike Evans (18.1) connection launched Nick into an early lead on Thursday night. His hope continued to climb after a solid DEF and TE showing, but Brent’s team was just getting started. He doesn’t have Josh Allen, but he has all of the guys Josh was throwing to; Dalton Kincaid (20.8) and DJ Moore (23.8) were a force to be reckoned with. Add in 2 MONSTER performances from Kenneth Walker (38.1) and Jonathan Taylor (26.5), and you have the recipe for a good old-fashioned beatdown. Nick surely lost sleep over the decision to trade Derrick Henry (38.9) for De’Von Achane (11.2)…fins up.
Jess def. Jeremy (175.2-100.4)
Jeremy may be the captain of the Budd Dairy Ship, but his leadership in the fantasy football universe has been under question since barely escaping 14th place last season. It’s a new year and a new look for Verona’s Fan Club. Anchored by strong performances from Jalen Hurts (25.1) and the “Steel Curtain” Steelers DEF (19.0), you would think he stood a chance. The Dairy Queen had other plans. Her stars found the endzone again, and again, and again… posting the highest total score of the week, and drowning Jeremy’s team in a pool of their own tears. Jaxon Dart (27.4), Bijan Robinson (33.1), D’Andre Swift (35.6), and Chris Olave (31.6) were all fighting for Jess’ attention on her Birthday Weekend.
Ashley def. Owen (141.1-104.2)
It’s Owen’s first year in the league, so you couldn’t blame him for underestimating Ashley’s strength on the field. He might have thought that a carry performance from Justin Jefferson (32.2), and a few supporting players Ceedee Lamb (16.4) and Pat Freiermuth (16.2) would be enough to coast in week 1. Veterans of BDFF had their PTSD triggered watching Ashley COOK. It was a balanced performance from her squad, showing few weaknesses. Trey McBride (25.7), Bucky Irving (21.3), and Patrick Mahomes (22.1) led the way. Owen will hope to be more prepared for the rematch in week 14, or he’ll suffer the same fate we all endured last season.
Vince def. Rob (124.5-119.7)
Rob’s week started with bad news: Brock Bowers was ruled out after a secret knee procedure. Unfortunately his other highly-drafted TE, Harold Fannin (4.3), plays for the Browns. It’s easy to get over being a Browns fan when your fantasy QB and running back combine for 77 points- Caleb Williams (38.1) and Jahmyr Gibbs (38.6) ran laps around the competition. However, Vince didn’t plan on rolling over. David Montgomery (29.9) and Christian Watson (35.7) put up nuclear performances of their own. It all came down to the Broncos game on Monday night. What could have been a triumphant victory for Rob, filled with Jaylen Waddle (1.2) TDs and Broncos DEF (3.0) dominance, turned into a sad, slow death by the hands of Bo Nix (a measly 5.4). Rob will lick his wounds on the beach all week, accompanied by a pack of cigs and the Carolina sun.
Frank def. Jen (118.6-73.9)
This was our only matchup between new team managers, so our experts didn’t know what to expect. Jen missed the news that Tua got hurt in practice before his first game with the Falcons. 0 points in the QB slot certainly didn’t help, but a rare performance from her first pick, Ja’Marr Chase (3.4), all but sealed her fate. While Frank’s team didn’t necessarily light up the scoreboard, they got the job done. Two stand out performances from Breece Hall (23.2) and Nico Collins (22.0) will give Frank momentum heading into next week.
Gerhardt def. McKay (137.6-105.8)
The battle of brotherly love featured standout performances on both sides, mixed with some head-scratching duds. McKay saw serious production from Lamar Jackson (25.6) and Amon-Ra St. Brown (29.5), but he had a combined ZERO POINTS from his two highly-rated TEs. Gerhardt’s team told a similar story: Marvin Harrison (4.5) and Tony Pollard (4.6) couldn’t get anything going. The true difference makers were Josh Allen (36.1) and kicker, Evan McPherson (23.0). Gerhardt cruises to victory. It’s a tale as old as time- big bro beats lil bro.
Kyle def. Tommi Jo (142.2-111.9)
If there’s one true rivalry in this league, it’s Tommi Jo and Kyle. It’s Main Bar vs Rooftop. They come from opposite sides of the tracks. There’s history. Kyle once proclaimed that he’d “never play fantasy football again” if Tommi Jo beat him. His hyperbole was somewhat grounded- she took 3 QBs in the first 5 rounds. Tommi went on to trade all of them except her first pick, Patrick Mahomes, who later tore his ACL. Kyle staged an uprisng that had half of the league picking up all available QBs so TJ couldn’t find a replacement. Against the odds, she won the whole damn thing. A beautiful triumph. Kyle has patiently waited for his revenge, and the scheduling gods gave him a shot in week 1.
Tommi Jo got off to a rough start on Wednesday when Matthew Stafford (4.1) and Blake Corum (5.8) laid an egg in Australia. The good news: she also had the top scoring player in the entire league, Derrick Henry (38.9). ~Nick punches a hole in the drywall~ Kyle, the Vikings fan, and owner of Kyler Murray (-0.4), likely fainted when his QB went out with an injury in the first quarter. He would have woken up to the rest of his team hogging the highlights. Ashton Jeanty (36.5) and Zay Flowers (29.0) put on a show. Javonte Williams (25.0) sealed the deal in the night game. xoxo Flowers for Tommi Jo.
